Skills & Strategies to Cope with Distress

Effective sensory modulation is an effective intervention that is suitable in both clinical and community settings. It can help people feel calmer and less anxious and therefore reduces distress. This workshop introduces the theory of sensory modulation, and then expands into practical strategies that are useful in everyday life across a range of settings.
It will explain:
- How sensory modulation impacts self-regulation
- The ways trauma impacts the brain and sensory modulation
- The importance of sensory screening and how to do it
- The relation between sensory, emotions, and cognition
- The impact of sympathetic nervous system and “Hand model of the brain”
- How to use sensory tools to create sensory modulation
Workshop aims
Joanne draws directly from her experience and research and will cover:
How sensory modulation supports wellbeing
Specific top-down strategies for sensory modulation with consideration of a person’s cognition, executive functioning and emotions
Specific bottom-up strategies for sensory modulation including sensory screening and sensory diets.
Who Should Attend
This workshop is ideal for clinical and allied staff, counsellors, social workers, key workers, and support workers who meet with service users in distress or tense environments.
Sensory Modulation is also a very effective skill set for teachers / educators where it is becoming common practice for schools to put a sensory corner into a room as a safe place for a child to calm down within.

About the presenter:

Joanne Lawless (Dip Arts, Psychology)
Joanne has extensive experience of autism, both professionally and personally, and is an experienced facilitator in adult learning. Joanne’s two adult sons are both Autistic.
She has a wide experience in both volunteer and paid roles in disability settings and has worked in a disability advisory role for disability training organisations.
Joanne is passionate about Enabling Good Lives (EGL) and system transformation as she works to bring about positive change in the lives of disabled people and their families / whānau.

Can't pay online and require an invoice?
We work hard to ensure that all workshops are cost effective by automating our systems. If you require an invoice (rather than paying by debit or credit card) there will be a $25.00 inc GST surcharge for this, and you will need to supply:
The full name and postal address required to appear on the invoice.
The contact name and email of the person(s) responsible for authorising this expense and approving payment.
Any purchase order references required on vendor invoices.

What happens if you have to cancel?
We know that sometimes your plans can change for many different reasons. Should you be unable to attend, a substitute delegate is welcome to attend at no extra cost. If a substitute delegate is not available and you need to cancel your registration, please be aware of the following:
Up to 7 days prior to the event you will be provided a refund of your registration cost, less a $20.00 inc GST per attendee service charge.
If you cancel within 7 days of the event, you are not eligible to receive a refund. Please note: should your registration not be paid by the time of the event, you are still liable to make the payment. Unpaid accounts may be passed over to our debt collection agency and additional costs may be incurred.
All cancellations must be received in writing via email.
Training is cancellable by GROW with 3 days’ notice if a minimum number of attendees is not met and full refunds will be provided.
