Exploring Motivational Interviewing

What is motivational interviewing?

“Motivational interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, goal-oriented style of communication with particular attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to, a specific goal, by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion” (Miller & Rollnick, 2012). 

1 Day Workshop: An introduction to Motivational Interviewing - Guiding change in helping conversations 

The aim of this interactive workshop is to give participants the opportunity to experience the basics of MI and decide the level of interest in learning more. Participants will be introduced to, and provided with the opportunities to explore the following:

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the fundamental spirit and processes of MI 

  • Directly experience the MI approach and contrast it with others

  • Be acquainted with relevant evidence of efficacy

  • Learn practical guidelines for exchanging information/giving advice “in the spirit of MI”

  • Learn a MI strategy for assessing and building motivation 

  • Have direct practice in, and experience of, these particular applications

2 Day Workshop: Motivational Interviewing - Processes and skills 

Following on from Day 1, the aim of this workshop is to provide participants with a more in-depth understanding of the style of MI, and how to continue applying it in practice.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Strengthen empathic listening skills

  • Direct practice and experience in the use of the core skills (including open ended questions, affirming, reflective listening, summarising) throughout the four processes of MI

  • Direct practice in listening for, and responding to, change talk

  • Learn the fundamental client language cues, that allow continued feedback and learning in practice

About the Presenter

Dr Eileen Britt

“Through my research and teaching I seek to make a difference, and to develop students who in turn will be people prepared to make a difference.”

Eileen Britt is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, an international collective of MI trainers (MINT) who promote excellence in the training, research, practice and implementation of Motivational Interviewing (MI). Eileen is also a MINT Certified MI Trainer.

Based in Christchurch, where she is a Professor in the School of Psychology, Speech and Hearing at the University of Canterbury (UC), she has worked as a Clinical Psychologist in mental health, health, criminal justice and research settings.

In her role at UC, Eileen teaches MI to postgraduate clinical psychology students, and psychiatric registrars, and in the past has also taught dietetic and health science students. She conducts research on MI, including: its use with different populations (e.g., youth and adults with diabetes); as a pre-treatment engagement intervention (e.g., for youth with mental health disorders or perpetrators of intimate partner violence); in different settings (e.g., sports coaching and Work and Income); it's mechanisms of change; and the training of MI. Eileen is also one of the authors of Takitaki Mai: A guide to Motivational Interviewing for Māori practitioners.

In addition, Eileen provides MI training (introductory to advanced), supervision and coaching, and coding training for a range of NGO services, governmental and professional organisations. In 2022 Eileen was the recipient of a National teaching award - Te Whatu Kairangi

This workshop will be delivered via ZOOM and you will be sent the login link, the Pre-Training Quiz you will need to complete, and the handouts and resources prior to the training. This is an interactive workshop with breakout room activities and we therefore ask all participants to have their own computer / laptop with a working camera and mic as this makes interaction with the breakout room activities and discussions easier and enhances the learning for all.

Upon completing your registration by hitting the blue 'Confirm Booking' button, you will receive an automated email from Lil Regie confirming the booking and amount paid by credit card. This will appear on your statement as from LIL REGIE LTD WELLINGTON.

A GST Tax Invoice showing your payment in full will also be emailed to you.

Can't pay online and require an invoice?

We work hard to ensure that all workshops are cost effective by automating our systems. If your organisation requires an invoice (rather than paying by debit or credit card) there will be a $25.00 inc GST surcharge for this, and you will need to supply:

  1. The full organisation name and postal address required to appear on the invoice.

  2. The contact name and email of the person(s) responsible for authorising this expense and approving payment.

  3. Any purchase order references required on vendor invoices.

What happens if you have to cancel?

We know that sometimes your plans can change for many different reasons. Should you be unable to attend, a substitute delegate is welcome to attend at no extra cost. If a substitute delegate is not available and you need to cancel your registration, please be aware of the following:

Face-Face Events - Up to 7 days prior to the event you will be provided a refund of your registration cost, less a $60.00 inc GST per attendee service charge.

Online Events - Up to 7 days prior to the event you will be provided a refund of your registration cost, less a $20.00 inc GST per attendee service charge.

If you cancel within 7 days of the event, you are not eligible to receive a refund. Please note: should your registration not be paid by the time of the event, you are still liable to make the payment. Unpaid accounts may be passed over to our debt collection agency and additional costs may be incurred. 

All cancellations must be received in writing (email). 

Training is cancellable by GROW with 7 days’ notice if a minimum number of attendees is not met and full refunds will be provided.

Further Details

Resources will be emailed to participants prior to the workshop. In line with our sustainability objectives, speaker presentations will not be distributed in hard copy, however attendees are invited to print them off and bring these with them or download them to any device they plan to take on the day.

Arrival tea and coffee, morning tea and lunch are included. Please note we only cater for gluten free, dairy free, vegan and vegetarian dietary requirements.
