Strengthening Connections: Circle of Security Classroom Approach
First 2000 days.

As a kaiako, you know the profound impact a supportive and nurturing environment has on the growth and well-being of tamariki. The Circle of Security classroom approach (COSC) is designed to enhance your skills and foster meaningful relationships between kaiako, tamariki, and their whānau.

It is for early care professionals and Primary Schools - for those working with tamariki up to age 8, as well as non-professionals - those with whānau with children will also benefit.

About the Programme:
This 2-session condensed version of the 8-week programme equips kaiako with essential key insights and practical strategies to create secure and loving relationships between tamariki and their caregivers. Rooted in attachment theory, this relationship-based programme highlights the significance of emotional connections in a child's development.

Supporting Transitions:
Every day, teachers play a vital role in helping young children and their caregivers navigate critical transitions into and out of early education and care settings. During these periods, tamariki need to feel connected and supported while away from their caregivers. The COS Classroom Approach emphasizes the importance of these first relationships, understanding that children with strong bonds to caring adults thrive in learning environments.

Reflective-Based Learning:
At the heart of this approach is the power of reflection. Deep learning emerges from thoughtful introspection. This programme encourages you to reflect on your teaching practice, developing your understanding of attachment theory, emotional cues, and communication dynamics. Through reflective conversations, you'll gain a new perspective on supporting tamariki, helping you build stronger bonds and a more inclusive learning environment.

Interactive Video Modules:
Thoughtfully designed resources and videos offer valuable insights into recognising emotional cues and applying effective communication techniques. Observing these interactions will help you refine your ability to address the needs of tamariki sensitively and empower their caregivers to do the same.

Shared Language and Hidden Insights:
Participating in the COS Classroom Approach provides participants with a shared language to discuss the significance of everyday interactions with colleagues and families. This common understanding highlights what is often hidden in plain sight—the crucial role relationships play in the children's sense of security and overall well-being.

Please Note: this workshop may touch on the topics such as grief and trauma, and some of the material covered in our workshops may be sensitive or triggering to certain participants. We encourage everyone to practice self-care and either reach out to us, or directly discuss any concerns with our presenter.

Learning Outcomes:

Duration: 2 weekly sessions, 2 hours each (4 hours total)

This training will:

  • Deepen your understanding of attachment theory and its implications for emotional development.
